IWD: Experts Advise NIJ Female Students On Career, Health

To commemorate the 2024 International Women’s Day (IWD) celebration, female students of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ) received exclusive lectures on career and health from various industry experts.

The interface session, which took place at the school’s premises, Ogba Lagos, on Friday, March 8th, was organised by the Initiative for Social Impact and Sustainable Development (ISISD) in conjunction with Nigerian Institute of Journalism, Lagos.

Students from all departments engaged in career talk, received beauty and health tips, lectures on personal hygiene, personal development and leadership skills, as well as a question/answer session.

Key contributors at the programme included Communication and Sustainability specialist, Dr. Ifedolapo Ademosu; Chief Nursing Officer Ifako Ijaiye General Hospital, Mrs. Olaitan Oluseyi; Social Developmental Journalist, Mrs. Funmi Falobi; and Associate Lecturer & Executive Director, Media Career Development Network, Mr. Lekan Otufodunrin.

While lecturing students on goal setting, Dr. Ademosu explained that attaining a desirable career first involves identifying the ‘why’ and then outlining steps that must be followed with focus.

“Life is a journey, and the road is never straight. You can look at women who have reached the pinnacle of where you want to be and observe how they got there,” she said.

While noting the challenges that women may face in career success, Dr. Ademosu encouraged the young women to start planning now.

In her contribution, Mrs. Oluseyi reminded the students that a healthy woman contributes to a healthy nation. She explained the three categories of health: spiritual, physical and mental.

She also mentored the students on daily habits that could positively impact their health.

According to the Chief Nursing Officer, “Endeavour to always go for a medical check-up at least once a year, especially when you are 35 years of age and above. Drink a minimum of 2 litres and a maximum of 4 litres of water daily. Observe between 6 to 8 hours of sleep daily, as well.”

Admonishing the young women on career development, Mr. Otufodunrin noted that they can break barriers through self-inspiration, speaking up intelligently, believing and being the best version of themselves.

The associate lecturer also advised students not to allow their background to limit them. He said that mentorship is also critical for navigating one’s career path.

Apreel6teen and Nature Gentle Touch, a thriving hair product brand, supported the programme. The manufacturing company gave tips on personal hygiene and hair care for women.

Female students who answered questions correctly were given free hair products.

“Despite my defects as a girl, this programme has helped me realise that my defects do not define who I am, and I can aspire for greatness,” Racheal Akeju, a student from the National Diploma 1 class commented.

Other students expressed satisfaction towards the event, noting that it opened their eyes as budding journalists to goal setting and achievement.
