NIJ Students Win Presidential Honor, Africa PR Contest Award

Coveted honours have come the way of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ), Ogba through two of its outstanding products.

The two are Miss Ayomide Akinnugba, an Higher National Diploma (HND) II student, and Victory Bernard who earlier graduated from the school and had finished his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme.
While Miss Akinnugba won a Silver medal and scholarship at the just concluded 2023 edition of Future Creative Leader Academic (FCLA) competition held at the Muson centre Lagos on May 20, 2023, Victory Bernard got Federal Government automatic employment and scholarships for outstanding performance in his service year, at the 50th Anniversary Honours Awards of the NYSC.
Speaking at the event, which was held at the state house conference centre, Abuja, Special Adviser (Media) to President Muhammadu Buhari, Mr. F’emi Adesina on behalf of his principal, commended the awardees.
He said out of the 65 recipients, 52 awards were in the Presidential category, while the remaining 13 were physically challenged ex-corps members recognised under the NYSC Hope Alive Programme.
In the case of Miss AKinugba, the competition in which she emerged second, lasted eight weeks featuring seminars and workshops designed for undergraduate students.
The participants were tasked to create a powerful intervention idea on behalf of “creating a better Africa” to sustain attention on the plight of people living in the flood-prone regions of the country.
While presenting her award to the Provost of the institution, Mr. Gbenga Adefaye, Miss Akinnugba expressed her joy for making the institution proud despite many hurdles she had to contend with. She admitted that the competition was tough and highly engaging but it really worth it.
“It was not easy for me at all because that was the period I was reading for my first semester examination and at the same time preparing for the competition” she said.
Mr. Adefaye commended her zeal and the trainer (lecturer) for always giving the institution good reputation in the advertising industry and pledged more support the opportunity comes.
The competition is the most prestigious advertising competition for higher institution students in Nigeria who are between 18 and 23 years and are final year students of their respective schools.
FCLA is a “subsidiary” of Pitcher Festival, organised by CHINI Africa. Miss Mary Owolabi from Covenant University (CU), Ota, Ogun state and Mr. Joshua Popoola from University of Ibadan, Oyo state won Gold and Bronze medals respectively.
