The Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ) Press and Public Relations Club on Thursday, May 22nd 2025 attended the second edition of Reporter Slam Africa held at the Alliance Française Mike Adenuga Centre in Lagos .
The event, which took place in Lagos, gathered top investigative journalists from across Sub-Saharan Africa.
Organised as a live storytelling competition, Reporter Slam Africa featured six journalists representing six countries: Margaret Osazuwa (Nigeria), Seth J. Bokpe (Ghana), Kgaugelo Masweneng (South Africa), Thomas Mukhwana (Kenya), Albert Karim Traore (Mali), and Yaddah Wanjiku Nduati (Uganda).
Each journalist delivered a ten-minute presentation based on original investigative work, covering critical topics such as governance, corruption, cyberbullying, and social justice. The event was held in front of a live audience and streamed online, allowing viewers around the world to vote for the standout performer.
The 2025 edition was hosted in Lagos in honour of last year’s winner, Melony Ishola from Nigeria. Following an evening of powerful presentations, Yaddah Wanjiku Nduati from Uganda was announced as this year’s Reporter Slam Africa Champion. She will go on to represent the continent at the Reporter Slam International in 2026.
NIJ Press Club members who attended described the experience as insightful and motivating. According to member of the Press Club, Balogun Daniel, the event reinforced my interest in Journalism, the importance of dynamic storytelling and investigative reporting in addressing issues that affect African societies.
In his words, “Attending the Reporter Slam showed me that journalism goes beyond facts and figures. It’s about becoming a voice.”
The Press Club members used the opportunity to engage with professional journalists, observe emerging trends in multimedia storytelling, and reflect on ways to enhance their own reporting skills within and beyond the campus.
Reporter Slam Africa continues to serve as a platform for empowering African journalists and reinforcing the role of the press in promoting accountability, justice, and democratic values
