NIJ Postpones Matriculation, Exams

The Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ), Ogba, Lagos, has postponed the date for its 2023/2024 matriculation and First Semester examination to Wednesday, March 6 and Thursday, March 7, 2024 respectively.

It would be recalled that the institution had earlier notified students that the matriculation ceremony would be held on February 14, 2024. The information on the change of examination date was disclosed in a memo sent to students on Monday, February 12, 2024.

According to the management, pushing the dates three weeks backwards for both milestone activities became inevitably necessary.

Speaking with the Student Affairs Officer, Mrs. Esther Eke, she disclosed that the extension was due to some procedural intricacies.

According to her, “The postponement of the examination commencement date was necessitated by technical considerations.”

It was also observed that the newly announced date for both activities has affected some levels more than the freshers.

Reacting to the notification, the President of the Students Representative Council (SRC), Mr. Oluwatosin Awelewa, revealed that the general reaction of the students to the delay is mixed.

“There are some students who are academically prepared and ready to move to the next level of their academics. Those who want to speed things up will frown at the delay,” said Awelewa.

According to the SRC president, the extension of the examination commencement date presents an opportunity to accommodate newly admitted students who have yet to familiarise themselves with topics covered throughout the first semester.

“Let’s remember that the extension allows the majority of the students to prepare well for examinations. Also, despite whatever technicalities were behind the delay, it’s an opportunity for students to pay their school fees. Had it been the dates were not shifted, I can tell you that about 40% of students may not participate,” he added.

Mr. Awelewa then urged both new and returning students to take advantage of the window by sitting up and sorting their fees so they could be prepared for both the matriculation ceremony and examination exercise.

As part of preparation for the forthcoming examination, students are expected to get their ID card and examination pass as access for participation.
