One of the unique selling points of the NIJ is in the structuring of its academic programmes to suit Mass Communication′s peculiar demands. As a demonstration of this commitment, there is a balance between theoretical and practical training of the students.
In addition to rich theoretical content, the institution boasts of an array of laboratories, studios and equipment to enrich the students′ practical application in their areas of study. These studios are equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and are manned by experienced and well-educated instructors.
The institution actively involves students in different kinds of sporting activities. Students take part in inter-collegiate games both within and outside Nigeria. An example is the annual football competition between NIJ and Ghana Institute of Journalism, Lagos State Inter-tetiary Games etc. The institution provides some basic recreational facilities for the total development of the students. It has a standard Football Field, a Volley Ball Court, mobile Basketball Court and other indoor games such as Table Tennis, Chess and Monopoly for students’ leisure, relaxation and recreation. Apart from the supporting facilities on campus, students also enjoy facilities at the Agege Stadium which is within the vicinity.
Even though there is no commercial bank on campus as at now, five banks within the vicinity are available for staff and students' use. Ther are Ecobank, Zenith Bank, GT Bank and Fidelity Bank at Ogba and Wema Bank Plc Omole. These banks offer a variety of banking services to their customer.
The institution operates an on-campus clinic for students and staffs. The clinic is headed by a qualified medical practitioner and assisted by qualifies nurses. Serious cases that are beyond the capacity of the clinic are referred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) and General Hospitals at Ikeja which is nearby. On admission into the institution, students must register with the clinic so as to enjoy available medical care obtained off-campus by students.
The institution has a standard Photo Studio where students obtain practical knowledge about photography, photojournalism and picture processing. The laboratory is used for processing of Digital images. It has 2 digital Cameras, 3 Desktop computers, I server, 2 scanners and 2 printer
The laboratory is used for the processing of black and while films. It has everything required for the processing of black and white films, and is complimented with 10 analogue camera
The institution has a standard Television Studio where students obtain practical knowledge about television broadcasting. The studio is specifically designed and built for production and presentation of audio-visual elements under a controlled condition. It has the basic analogue and digital equipment for production and presentation of programmes. It has a control room and presentation area.
The institution has a standard Radio Studio where students obtain practical knowledge about radio broadcasting. The studio is specifically built and designed for the production of audio materials, under a controlled condition. It has basic equipment required for recording and mixing of sounds. It is also equipped with a control room ad performance room.
NIJ PR studio provides students with opportunities to learn how to write and interpret briefs for Advertisement and Public Relations. The laboratory is designed for the conceptualization and production of promotional and editorial messages in Public Relations and Advertising. It has the basic instrument required by Copywriters, illustrators and Graphic Artists.

The Institution has a well equipped computer laboratory in a conducive environment where student can enhance their computer literacy skills.
This is the information nerve centre of the institution, equipped with modern gadgets like computers, printers and scanners. In addition to systems procured by the school itself, an NIJ and NITDA collaboration has seen to the supply of additional fully networked computer equipment and solar panels. These are to facilitate students’ practical in ICT. All the systems in the ICT lab are connected to the Internet and are provided with alternate power supply in case of power outage.
This is a two-in-one lab specifically designed for students’ practical learning in news writing, and editing. The setting aims to typify an ideal news room setting, and helps the students understand real life situation in average news room. It boasts of news publication of different types from national and local newspapers to training periodicals produced by the students.
Also, the editorial work of the NIJ periodical, the NIJ Voice is produced by the students across the disciplines in the News writing/Editing lab
Registration of Clubs and Societies should be channeled through the Student's Affairs Officers for approval. Memebership of which is open to all registered students.
The institution operates and off-campus system. However, there are students hostels around the vicinity which are operated by private individuals and organizations.
The institution has a standard, well equipped and conducive library that registered students can use to enhance their learning experience. The library is the academic nerve of the institution. It has over 3,000 volume of books and 5,000 serials and a seating capacity for about one hundred readers. NIJ operates with the Library of Congress Scheme. The institution's library policy hand book is available to all students to guide them on the use of this facility.
As part of the recreational facilities provided, there are common rooms for each lf the levels of study: ND, HND and PGD, which are equipped with television sets to enable the students unwind and or catch up with other trends within and around the country.
The Management through a private service provider operates a canteen service on campus for its staff and students. Apart from direct service to staff and students, the canteen also comes in handy in providing menu and refreshment for other campus activities or programmes.
No student group, association, union, club or society shall make use of any of the institution's property e.g Auditorium, classroom, equipment etc or any part of the premises without obtaining approval of management. Request for the use of the above mentioned property/equipment should be channeled through the Student's Affairs Officer or the respective HODs as the case may be.
Minimum noise level should be maintained during students activities. No alcohol, smoking or fighting is allowed. Chairs, tables, automobiles, erection or digging are not allowed on the football field.
Tampering with or damaging institution's property is strictly prohibited. Any student who cause damage to the property belonging to the institution shall be disciplined and appropriately surcharged.
The institution abhors the existence of secret societies or cults on campus a they remain banned. In other words, it is criminal to belong to secret cult or be in possession of dangerous weapons such as guns, grenade, swords, etc within the campus. The penalty is expulsion or prosecution.
In addition, nocturnal or clandestine meetings are outlawed within or around the campus.
